The Second Annual Watershed Festival

The Second Annual Watershed Festival was held on May 3, 2003 at Camp Occohannock on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Over 20 exhibits were set up representing multiple public agencies, private organizations and businesses. Each presented demonstrations or information related to watersheds, the rich diversity of resources supported by these natural drainages, and impacts an individual can have on the body of water on which they live. The goal of the festival was that every person in attendance develop an increased awareness and stewardship of their water resources.

The day was also filled with activities for youth. There was fish printing, canoeing, face painting and virtual fishing. A free lunch was also provided.

Generous local businesses donated money, prizes and food for the festival.

In order to be eligible for prizes, each child had to first fill a card with "water wizard" stickers. To earn a sticker to put on their card they had to successfully answer a watershed related question presented at each exhibit.

The grand prizes were:

  • A canoe trip on Occohannock Creek for up to eight people.
  • A plane trip over the Eastern Shore watershed for two people
  • An original watercolor painting by a popular local artist, Don Sparrow.
  • A kayak trip for two.
  • A pair of birding binoculars.
