PROJECTS 2003
The Eastern Shore of Virginia
Resource Conservation & Development
#043 Wishart Point Boat Harbor
The Eastern Shore RC&D Council has been working with the Wishart’s
Point community, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and Accomack County to
develop a boat ramp at Wishart’s Point and have the channel to the
area dredged. Some funding has been acquired from the Virginia Marine Resources
Commission to initiate preliminary engineering and planning studies for
Wishart’s Point.
#158 Anti-Litter Postcard Campaign
A postage paid Anti-Litter Postcard will be printed and distributed throughout
the Eastern Shore. When someone sees a “litter bug” they fill
out the information on the card and drop it in the mail. The RC&D
will forward the cards to the Sheriff’s Departments of either Northampton
or Accomack County. The county sheriff will then give a personal phone
call to the “litter bug.” This is a partnership effort of
the Eastern Shore RC&D Council, Accomack and Northampton counties
Boards of Supervisors, and the Accomack and Northampton Sheriff’s
Departments.

#163 Nassawadox Creek Dredging
Nassawadox Creek is silted in and in desperate need of dredging. Matching
funds were needed from the county in order to dredge Nassawadox Creek.
Funds are now being collected from landowners on the creek through additional
taxes for the purpose of dredging the creek.
#171 Guard Shore Beach Development
With the Eastern Shore RC&D Council’s assistance, Guilford Creek
has been dredged and the dredged material has been placed on Guard Shore
to increase the beach area. Protective grasses have been planted to help
prevent erosion. The land has been sold from a private owner to the Department
of Game and Inland Fisheries. The Council will create a working relationship
with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with hopes of developing
outdoor recreational and educational opportunities for Guard Shore.
#173 Eastern Shore Farmland Protection
In 2003, the Eastern Shore RC&D Council will continue coordinating
meetings with Northampton County and assist in any coordination between
Accomack and Northampton counties with the development of a plan for the
Delmarva Conservation Corridors to be merged with Delaware and Maryland
and submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture by late Spring 2003.
#177 Living Classroom Curriculum
The Council will support training programs for the teachers of the Eastern
Shore through the Environmental Education Council so that the teachers
and students will be able to use the living classrooms to their fullest
potential. 4th and 5th grade teachers will be supplied with curriculum
materials addressing watersheds. On April 22, 2003 teachers will be invited
to a program “Introducing Wildlife Mapping” via the Environmental
Education Council.
#181 Cheapside Community Development
There are problems in the Cheapside community with stormwater management
and drainage. Site visits have been made and Northampton County is searching
for funds or grants to dig ditches. The Eastern Shore RC&D Council
will assist with the drainage plan and getting local people to sign right-of-ways
to use their property for ditches to the drain area.
#182 Watershed Festival 2003
The Watershed Festival 2003 committee began planning for this year’s
festival in October 2002. The Eastern Shore RC&D Council will continue
to coordinate the Festival committee meetings. They will also assist with
the planning of the Festival by: contacting agencies, businesses, and
organizations to participate; working with middle school teachers to utilize
the Festival in teaching the SOL’s; implement a strong advertising
campaign; and assist with volunteer sign-ups. The Watershed Festival 2003
will be held on April 26, 2003 with a rain date of May 3, 2003 at the
beautiful Camp Occohannock on-the-Bay on the Eastern Shore of VA.

#183 Grant Seekers Network
This project is a spin-off of the Grant Writing project in 2002. The grant
writing course participants and the public are invited to share information
and experiences in grant writing. The Eastern Shore RC&D Council is
partnering with VA Cooperative Extension and hosting quarterly meetings
for 2003. Each meeting will be advertised in the local newspapers and
a guest speaker will speak at each meeting on a particular aspect of grant
writing.
#184 Youth Recreation Centers for the Eastern
Shore
The RC&D Council has been successful in assisting with the development
of a Boys and Girls Club of America in the town of Cape Charles.
In 2003, the Council will continue assisting Exmore with their efforts
to develop a Boys and Girls Club by assisting with grant applications
and club planning. The Council will also coordinate and facilitate meetings
between other towns on the Eastern Shore and the Boys and Girls Club of
South Hampton Roads.
#185 Wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface
The Eastern Shore RC&D Council, in cooperation with the U.S. Forestry
Service and the VA Department of Forestry, will host this public meeting
at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research Station in Painter, VA from
8 a.m. until noon on March 19, 2003. Presenters will inform attendees
about population growth, wildfires, the wildland urban interface and Firewise
planning techniques. |
